Most families do not want to manage three different dental offices. A pediatric practice for the kids, a general dentist for the parents, and someone else entirely when a grandparent needs a denture reline is a lot of appointments to keep straight.
Dr. Bryant King and Dr. Shelly King have been treating whole families at our Daniels Parkway office for over twenty years. In a lot of cases we are now seeing the children of patients we started with.
Care For Every Age Under One Roof
Family dentistry is less a specific procedure than a way of running a practice. It means the same team knows your history, your children's history, and what your family is actually comfortable with.
Children and teens
First visits, cleanings, sealants, monitoring how permanent teeth are coming in, and mouthguard recommendations for kids playing sports.
Adults
Routine preventive care, fillings, crowns, and cosmetic work like teeth whitening and veneers when you want it.
Older adults
Gum disease treatment, dentures and partials, dental implants, and care for teeth that have been through decades of previous dental work.
Scheduling matters too. When you call, let our front desk know that you are booking for more than one family member and we will look at what the day allows.
Your Child's First Visit
The general recommendation is a first dental visit by around age one, or within six months of the first tooth appearing. That first appointment is not really about treatment. It is about the child deciding the dental office is not a scary place.
For a young child, we will typically count teeth, do a gentle look for early decay, clean anything that needs cleaning, and talk with you about brushing, bottles, thumb sucking, and what to expect next. Short and uneventful is exactly the goal.
If your child is older and already nervous, tell us before the appointment rather than after. Dr. Shelly King is the person our anxious patients ask for by name, and a great deal of that comes down to going slowly and explaining what is about to happen before it happens.
We Do Not Treat What Does Not Need Treating
Parents tell us this is what they remember most about bringing their kids here.
Not every small spot on a child's tooth needs to be drilled. Early enamel changes can sometimes remineralize with good home care and fluoride. A tiny cavity in a baby tooth that is going to fall out in a few months often does not need a filling at all. In those situations we would rather watch it and tell you honestly what we are watching for.
The same applies to fluoride. If you have questions or preferences about fluoride for your children, we would rather have that conversation with you than assume. It is your decision, and we will give you our reasoning and then respect what you choose.
Sealants And Everyday Prevention
The chewing surfaces of the back molars have deep grooves that a toothbrush bristle physically cannot reach into. Sealants are a thin protective coating applied to those grooves, usually shortly after the permanent molars come in, and they are quick, painless, and require no numbing.
Beyond that, the most useful thing we tell parents about cavity prevention has nothing to do with the dental office. When it comes to sugar, how often matters more than how much. A child who sips juice throughout the afternoon is doing more damage than one who drinks a glass with lunch and is done, because every new exposure starts a fresh round of acid production.

How often should my family come in?
Every six months works well for most people. Some patients with very healthy mouths do fine at once a year, and patients with a history of gum disease often need periodontal maintenance every three months. We will recommend an interval based on what we actually see, not a default.
Can we all be seen on the same day?
Often, yes, depending on how the schedule looks. Let our front desk know when you call that you are booking for several family members and we will do what we can to group the appointments.
My child is terrified of the dentist. What do you do differently?
We tell them what is going to happen before we do it, we let them see and hold the instruments that are not sharp, and we stop when they ask us to stop. Nothing about that is complicated, but it takes patience and time in the schedule, and it is a large part of why nervous patients keep coming back to us.

To my surprise they had an opening later that day. First let me say I was so impressed when I walked in to a beautiful bright well appointed clean office and warmly greeted by the friendly knowledgeable staff. Went ahead and took my insurance info (which they are filing for me so I can be reimbursed) and did all the paperwork. I say this because my time in the waiting area I noticed the pleased patients checking out and others coming in. Coming from up north who had a very modern excellent local dentist, Daniel Parkway Dental reminded me of what was left behind. And confirmed by the excellent medical care by Dr Shelly King. Both her & her assistant were gentle yet professional. In a layman’s eyes like myself I thought “just glue it back”, I’m so glad I didn’t try a do it yourself nor go to one of those “doc in a box” popping up on every corner. It was a very intricate procedure taking time to make sure the bites correct. Someone without much experience could have broken the tiny pins my old dentist had made.
