Immediate Dentures Placed The Day Of Extraction
For most people facing extractions, the hardest part is not the procedure. It is the question nobody wants to ask out loud: will I have to go around without teeth while my gums heal?
You will not. Immediate dentures, which many patients know as same day dentures, are made in advance and placed the same day your teeth are removed. You walk out with a complete smile.
What "Same Day Dentures" Actually Means
This phrase gets used loosely in dental advertising, so it is worth being precise about it. It does not mean we manufacture a finished, permanent denture in a single appointment.
What it means is that your denture is designed and fabricated ahead of time, using impressions and measurements taken before your extractions. On the day of your procedure, the teeth come out and the denture goes in during the same visit. There is no in-between period where you are without teeth.
That distinction matters because of what happens next. Your gums and the underlying bone change shape considerably as they heal from extractions, over a period of months rather than weeks. A denture that fits perfectly on day one will not fit the same way at week twelve, and that is expected rather than a problem with the denture. It is simply the nature of healing.
So an immediate denture serves two purposes at once. It gives you teeth and normal appearance throughout healing, and it protects the extraction sites while they close.
Who Immediate Dentures Are Right For
Immediate dentures make sense for most patients who are having remaining teeth removed and moving to a full or partial denture. They are particularly worth considering if:
You cannot take time away from work or public life
Nobody wants to explain a healing mouth at the office. An immediate denture removes that consideration entirely.
You have front teeth being removed
The cosmetic difference is significant, and this is where patients feel it most.
You would find going without teeth genuinely distressing
That is a legitimate reason on its own. A great many people find the prospect harder than the surgery itself, and it is worth telling us if you feel that way.
There are situations where a conventional denture, made after your gums have healed, ends up being the better path. Extensive infection, certain bone conditions, or medical factors can change the recommendation. Dr. Bryant King and Dr. Shelly King will examine your mouth, take digital x-rays, and tell you honestly which approach fits your situation rather than defaulting to one.
What The Process Looks Like
Consultation and planning
We examine your remaining teeth, review x-rays to assess the bone underneath, and talk through your options including dental implants and implant-supported dentures if you want to weigh them. You will receive written prices on each reasonable option before anything is scheduled.
Impressions and measurements
Taken while your natural teeth are still in place. This is how the lab knows the shape of your arch, your bite, and how your teeth should be positioned and shaded. If you have preferences about the appearance of your new teeth, this is the conversation to have.
Extraction and placement day
Your teeth are removed and the denture is placed the same visit. We will give you specific aftercare instructions, and in most cases we ask you to leave the denture in for the first stretch of healing, since removing it early can allow swelling that makes it difficult to get back in.
Follow-up adjustments
Sore spots are normal in the first weeks and are easily adjusted. Do not tough these out at home. A five-minute adjustment solves what weeks of discomfort will not.
Why A Reline Is Part Of The Plan, Not An Upsell
Because your gums shrink as they heal, your immediate denture will need to be relined once healing has largely settled. A reline resurfaces the tissue side of the denture so it fits the shape your mouth has actually become.
We tell patients about this up front, because a practice that does not mention it leaves you thinking your denture failed when it is doing exactly what it was designed to do. Budget for the reline as part of the process from the beginning. Some patients ultimately choose a new permanent denture after healing and keep the immediate one as a spare, which is also a reasonable path.

Frequently Asked Questions
Will I really leave with teeth the same day?
Does the denture fit perfectly right away?
How long does healing take?
Will it hurt?
Can I eat normally right away?
What about implants instead?
Implants and implant-supported dentures are worth understanding before you decide, because they hold the denture firmly and help preserve the jawbone over time. They also cost more and take longer. We will lay out both paths with written estimates so you can compare them properly rather than being steered.

Great dentist office. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly. The dentist isn't quick to jump to fillings for children with tiny cavities that could heal or cavities in a baby tooth that's coming out soon. The hygienist … More we see if very respectful of the decisions we make regarding fluoride. They are a wonderful family own practice and Dr. Bryant and Dr. Shelley are so great with our family. -

Had an urgent need for an appointment (my porcelain crown fell out over holiday weekend). Being fairly new to the area and not having a regular dentist, I took a chance & stopped into Daniels Parkway Dental to see if I could get an … More appointment in the next few days. To my surprise they had an opening later that day. First let me say I was so impressed when I walked in to a beautiful bright well appointed clean office and warmly greeted by the friendly knowledgeable staff. Went ahead and took my insurance info (which they are filing for me so I can be reimbursed) and did all the paperwork. I say this because my time in the waiting area I noticed the pleased patients checking out and others coming in. Coming from up north who had a very modern excellent local dentist, Daniel Parkway Dental reminded me of what was left behind. And confirmed by the excellent medical care by Dr Shelly King. Both her & her assistant were gentle yet professional. In a layman’s eyes like myself I thought “just glue it back”, I’m so glad I didn’t try a do it yourself nor go to one of those “doc in a box” popping up on every corner. It was a very intricate procedure taking time to make sure the bites correct. Someone without much experience could have broken the tiny pins my old dentist had made. Or would have easily said I need a new one meaning lots of $$$$$. It was divine steering which brought me to Daniel Parkway Dental. A local family dentistry who’s been around for 20 years and not going anywhere. This evening I was able to enjoy my food and would never know it had fallen out few days ago. I’m so glad I’ve found a dental practice I can trust & look forward to going back for routine care for myself & my husband.
Thank you again Dr Shelly King & staff🤗
